Bridging the Execution Gap: The Rise of the Network Digital Twin

In telecommunications, the conversation is usually centred on "what" and "how.” What is the peak speed of the network, and how do we reduce latency? But as the industry pushes toward 6G, the conversation is changing. While speed remains essential, reliability has become the real challenge: How do we bridge the gap between a theoretical network design and a successful, zero-risk deployment?

Canada’s strategic collaborations with European nations are a key part of this. By partnering with Euro-based entities, Canada is helping to build a diversified innovation ecosystem that ensures digital infrastructure remains secure, resilient, and robust.

The Engine of Collaboration: Eureka and SUSTAINET

Eureka is a big part of this effort. By uniting government, academia, and industry across more than 45 countries, Eureka creates a shared framework for innovation. This collective approach enables technologies to be validated and scaled with much greater speed and efficiency.

Within this ecosystem, CELTIC-NEXT focuses specifically on the next generation of communications. The new gold standard is fast networks that are secure, energy-efficient, and resilient by design.

A flagship project under CELIC-NEXT, with over 100 partners, SUSTAINET is a massive, coordinated effort to future-proof communications in the face of global crises. This project includes three core pillars:

  • Advance: focuses on improving the sustainability and efficiency of future network infrastructure.
  • Innovate: looks toward the horizon of 6G.
  • Guardian: addresses network management, security, and the most pressing concern of the modern era: trust.

The Gap Between Strategy and Execution

While these pillars provide a brilliant strategic roadmap, the telecom industry faces a recurring problem: the "Execution Gap." There is a world of difference between a theoretical model of a resilient 6G network and the actual deployment of that network in a live environment.

Physical labs have long been the gold standard for bridging this gap, providing indispensable, hands-on validation of hardware and configurations. However, as network complexity grows, the demand for agility has increased. By complementing physical labs with virtual capabilities, operators can now scale their testing and iterate faster than ever before.

Acentury’s Role: The Network Digital Twin (NDT)

This is where Acentury is stepping in to change the equation. Through a grant from the Government of Canada and participation in the SUSTAINET-guardian project, Acentury is partnering with a group of experts to research and develop a process for creating "Network Digital Twins" (NDTs).

Essentially, an NDT is a high-fidelity, virtual mirror of a physical network. By using the LAMTA integration, Acentury is enabling operators to move their testing and optimization into a virtual environment.

Imagine a "flight simulator" for telecommunications. Instead of risking a live network outage or spending millions on physical hardware to test a new configuration, an operator can use the LAMTA NDT to simulate network activity, stress-test for failures, and sharpen performance virtually.
